Ballinduff Castle

The Skerritt family (originally called 'Huscared') were first documented in County Galway in 1242 and are thought to have been of English origin. Five members Skerritt family of were to serve as Mayors of Galway up 1606, beginning with John Skerritt who was the 7th Mayor of Galway, 1491-1492
Ballinduff Castle is mentioned in the 1469 'Annals of the Four Masters' as the site of a contest between The Clanricarde and Red Hugh O'Donnell aided by the Mayo Burke clan of County Mayo. The Clanricarde was a Gaelic title give to the overlord of what is now County Galway and he was defeated in this battle.
