Cuilcagh Mountain from Glangevlin

This photograph of Cuilcagh Mountain (665m) was taken from Glangevlin, Co. Cavan in May 2011. The summit of Cuilcagh Mountain lies on the border between Cavan and Fermanagh and is the highest point in both counties.

Cuilcagh was merged with the Marble Arch Caves & Cladagh Glen Nature Reserve to create the 'Marble Arch Caves and Cuilcagh Mountain European Geopark' in 2007. The park was given UNESCO Global Geopark in 2008.

The mountain summit is topped by gritstone which is exposed in places as steep cliffs sweeping down to the lower sandstone and shale slopes below. The middle slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain are covered with a thick layer of peat which forms one of the largest expanses of blanket bog in Ulster and is home to a wide variety of wetland flora and fauna. The lower regions of the mountain are formed of limestone and feature complex cave systems.
